Last week was a busy one for the folks who worry about how well America's kids are reading. On Monday, a Tennessee principal ate worms—as he'd vowed to do if his students could finish 10,000 books by March 2. (Their total was more than 13,000.) On Tuesday, House Speaker Denny Hastert and dozens of sports heroes, governors, and movie stars marked Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading books like Green Eggs and Ham to school kids around the country. Throughout the week, Congress was pushing a bill intended to give states more say over how to spend federal education dollars more wisely on a host of school reforms in reading and other subjects.
