Fixing Broken Cities: The Implementation of Urban Development Strategies

Growing up in Philadelphia in the postindustrial era, it was hard not to be imbued with the dominant cultural narrative of a city that while once great was in the steep throes of decline. These stories of decline were far-reaching and included the city's economic and employment base, social and civic life, public services, political leadership, and infrastructure. Having moved away from the city for a decade and returned at the tail end of the real estate bubble in the United States, I was surprised to find that while much of the city looked the same (and in some cases worse), the narrative had changed.
