BRAZILIAN oil giant Petrobras is developing a novel technology solution to cope with potential problems arising from the use of flexible risers with a series of floating production, storage and offloading vessels installed at pre-salt fields in the prolific Santos basin. The first engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract of this kind being offered by Petrobras -sources said it could be worth $500 million to $1 billion - covers five large FPSOs installed in the Tupi field. However, the scope can be replicated at other developments in the pre-salt play.A few years ago, Petrobras recorded three separate failures on flexible pipes used to reinject gas into the Tupi and Sapinhoa fields - incidents the oil company attributed to problems related to stress-induced corrosion cracking from carbon dioxide (SC-CO_2).
