TIMOR-LESTE'S government has appointed a new minister for petroleum & mining as it attempts to pass its state budget for 2020, which will draw heavily on the country's petroleum revenues. Vitor Soares will replace Timor-Leste's long-standing petroleum minister Alfredo Pires. Timor-Leste sources said Soares is a member of the Fretilin political party and was an academic at the National University of Timor-Leste, but he has no experience in the oil and gas sector. There was no official explanation for the ministerial change, which was part of a swearing-in ceremony of the country's eighth constitutional government on 24 June in the capital city Dili that saw 21 new ministers appointed.
