Gazprom drills at Yamal

RUSSIAN gas monopoly Gazprom has started drilling the first development well on the Kharasavey gas field on the Yamal Peninsula after more than a year of mobilisation and preparatory work. The state-controlled company said that well 4051 will be drilled to a depth of 2540 metres to tap conventional gas reserves in the Senoman and Apt formations. Regional drilling contractor Urengoy Bureniye is scheduled to drill 16 holes in total before the end of this year in the onshore segment of the structure. Gazprom has awarded a contract to drill all 167 wells to Gazprom Bureniye, which owns Urengoy Bureniye, between 2020 and 2023. Three of these holes will have an extended reach profile, targeting reservoirs in the offshore segment of the Kharasavey field, as Gazprom had postponed its original plan to build artificial islands in shallow waters of the Kara Sea for drilling purposes. The Kharasavey field holds estimated recoverable conventional gas reserves of about 2 trillion cubic metres of gas, with an annual plateau production envisaged at 32 billion cubic metres to be achieved between 2026 and 2027. To compensate Gazprom for higher investments in the project due to its remote location and harsh Arctic environment, authorities agreed to reduce the scheme's gas production tax. Gazprom will pay just 20% of the normal tax rate when gas production begins at Kharasavey.
