Global LNG funding riding high

GLOBAL liquefied natural gas project financing in the first half of 2020 is on track to surpass 2017 and 2018 levels despite headwinds including weak demand driven by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a recent presentation from energy and ship brokerage Poten & Partners Projects including Nigeria LNG Train 7 and Cheniere's Sabine Pass LNG on the US Gulf Coast secured some $8.4 billion in financing in May, Poten business intelligence finance advisor Melanie Lovatt said during a webinar last week. The deals show there is some optimism for a sector that was already facing challenges when the pandemic struck earlier this year, causing demand and prices to deteriorate even further. In the US, more than 40 cargoes have been cancelled for July loading after 33 scheduled for June were cancelled, according to Poten's numbers.
