摘要

KENYA has successfully delayed hearings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning its maritime boundary dispute with Somalia over a wedge of potentially oil-rich acreage that both states have recently sought to licence. Previously scheduled to sit this week to hear depositions, the court agreed to postpone proceedings until 4 November, ostensibly because Kenya insisted on more time to recruit a new legal defence team. Somalia took the dispute to court in 2014 after several bilateral attempts to resolve the matter failed. Some 150,000 square kilometres of waters would revert to Kenya if the ICJ affirms use of the line of latitude in determining the boundary.
