THE Papua New Guinea government appears to have ended its offensive against the Papua LNG gas project, and hopefully will also get behind the other liquefied natural gas proposals, writes Russell Searancke. There are more discussions under way between the government and the Totalled Papua LNG joint venture on a so-called "shortlist" of matters, but the good news is that the government says it supports the general economics and fiscal terms of the Papua LNG Gas Agreement. It could have been disastrous had they meddled with the terms, which incidentally are far better for the state than the ExxonMobil-led PNG LNG project Total, which already felt aggrieved about the government reviewing the gas agreement, could have put Papua LNG on the back burner, or even decided to sell.
