Shell profits down as low prices hit key segments

ANGLO-DUTCH supermajor Shell posted a fall in second-quarter profits compared to the same period last year as all its key business segments showed poorer underlying performance. Earnings on a current cost of supply basis, excluding identified items, fell from $4.69 billion a year ago to $3.46 billion in the recent quarter, with the upstream, integrated gas and downstream segments all showing lower earnings. Revenues were also down, falling to $90.5 billion from $96.8 billion in the second quarter of 2018. "The general macro (environment) at this point in time of course is not supportive in a number of areas," chief executive Ben van Beurden told reporters.
