A fresh wave of violence has swept Iraq after a lull of several weeks as Opec's second-biggest oil producer tries to fill a political vacuum following the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi in November. At the same time, rockets were fired towards the US Embassy in the capital Baghdad, underscoring instability in a country that has been gripped by turmoil since the 2003 US-led invasion, which toppled long-time leader Saddam Hussein.
