EQUINOR looks set to explore as fully as possible the feasibility of powering its Rosebank development with low-carbon electricity cabled over the seabed despite the technical challenges posed by challenging weather and sea conditions found in the remote West of Shetland area, write Rob Watts, Ole Ketil Helgesen and Iain Esau. The Norwegian operator announced plans this week to cut greenhouse gas emissions from its domestic operations by 40% this decade and to near zero by 2050, primarily by replacing electricity from gas turbines with renewable energy at platforms, including offshore wind turbines and power carried over subsea cables.
