UK INDEPENDENT Cairn Energy has come up dry at its Alom-1 exploration well on Block 9 off Mexico. The well was being drilled to prove hydrocarbons in stacked Pleistocene targets but only intersected 500 metres of high-quality, water bearing sands across multiple targets. Information from the well will be used to help calibrate seismic data and geological models and is being integrated to improve understanding of the petroleum system. Once the Alom-l is plugged and abandoned, the semi-submersible Maersk Developer will be moved to drill the Bitol-1 well on Block 9.
