CNOOC eyes FLNG solutions in South China Sea

FLOATING liquefied natural gas could provide a solution to unlock undeveloped gas reserves in the deep-water South China Sea, but technical hurdles and the high cost of building FLNG vessels could keep the ambition at bay for the moment. Leading offshore operator China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is keen to develop stranded gas fields off China by using FLNG vessels, in part to keep up with the cutting-edge technology being applied by its overseas peers.
