摘要

CAMEROON President Paul Biya has banned demonstrations by the opposition Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), accusing the protest group of trying to destabilise the country in what a human rights group has called the latest measure to stifle dissent, writes Barry Morgan. Minister of Territorial Administration Atanga Nji said the MRC decision to call people into the streets on the anniversary of a 1984 coup attempt to oust Biya was an act of provocation, but Human Rights Watch (HRW) said the government has repeatedly blocked peaceful protests with force, arbitrary arrests and detention.
