AUSTRALIAN operator Karoon Gas has received bids in response to a call for a semi-submersible rig or a drillship to drill at least one well in about 360 metres of water off Peru. The drilling programme, which could herald the start of a period of unprecedented offshore activity for Peru, will target turbidite sandstones down to a target depth of around 2700 metres. The drilling location is on Block Z-38, in the Tumbes basin. Karoon aims to spud the Marina-1 wildcat by April 2020, and may use the rig to drill a second probe. Karoon has described the Marina prospect as having a gross prospective contingent resource of up to 256 million barrels. Anglo-Irish independent Tullow Oil has a 35% stake in the block, following a farm-in transaction.
