Until the last couple of years, monitoring the venture capital scene in Atlanta was a relatively simple process. The deals were seen by a handful of venture capitalists, mostly middle-aged white men with business backgrounds. The funds these firms managed were small-usually less than $50 million-and it took them about three years to spend each fund. The investments, by necessity, were relatively small; a $10 million round, syndicated among several firms, was a big story. Get $25 million, and it was gigantic news.
