Once Upon a Time ...

A ncient Greek mariners called the two promontories that limn the narrow Straits of Gibraltar "The Pillars of Hercules." The Pillars were the nexus at the western end of the Mediterranean through which the Phoenicians, and later the Greeks, sailed, spreading their ideas and influence throughout the known world. Over the 20-odd years that I have lived in Silicon Valley and San Francisco, as my children were born, watching the Valley change, I have found myself looking out, from the foothills of the coastal range that parallels Silicon Valley, at another nexus of geography: the physical area that I have come to think of as a modern-day Pillars of Hercules.
