Last month, the editor of this publication discussed our need to take accounting practices more seriously. The truth is, we have finessed our businesses' numbers for over a decade, with and without our accountants' help. The manipulation of our financial reporting has become ingrained throughout American business as a way to "even out" our numbers and keep our investors and our boards happy. And since our board members and accountants have vested interests in our companies' successful financial reports, everyone has willingly complied.
