Description. Unmanned ground vehicle. Sponsor. U.S. Department of Defense. Status. System Development and Demonstration phase contract awarded in 2004 for the Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle (SUGV). The SUGV will soon enter production. A production decision for the Man Transportable Robotic System (MTRS) occurred in 2005. Total Produced. Approximately 3,462 PackBots, 3,030 Talons and 10 Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SUGVs) were complete by the end of 2010. Full-scale production of the SUGV has not commenced. The U.S. is procuring PackBot and Talon as part of the MTRS program. Prior to initiation of that program, Foster-Miller produced about 300 Talon robotic vehicles and iRobot about 200 PackBot UGVs. Some 90 percent of the robotic vehicles were sent to Afghanistan and Iraq. Application. To conduct reconnaissance missions in sewers and tunnels and perform other hazardous duties. Price Range. Initially, an MTRS unit costs between $125,000 and $141,000. Higher procurement has the price at $60,000 per vehicle. The SUGV could cost about $70,000-$90,000.
