MAD a bout MAVs Swiss Students Develop MAV Swarm; USAF Contemplates MAV Defenses

Swiss engineering students have demonstrated a swarm of micro unmanned aircraft, which they say could one day lead to the deploy- ment of a fast-moving, flexible communications network for rescuers in disaster areas. Students Sabine Hauert, Severin Leven, Jean-Christoph Zufferey and Dario Floreano attend the Ecole Polytechnique Federate de Lausanne (EPFL) school of engineering and head the Swarming Micro Air Vehicle Network (SMAVNET) program, which in August demonstrated a 10-vehicle MAV swarm.
