At the annual Unmanned Systems - Defense. Protection. Security. (USDPS) conference, which starts this summer, AUVSI will bring together military leaders and technology developers to explore how unmanned and autonomous systems are changing the landscape of defense, security and intelligence operations. AUVSI was founded to support the armed services, and our association continues to play an important role of convening the unmanned systems community to determine how the technology will help protect and defend our nation in the future. In 1972, a group of military personnel and defense contractors at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, formed the National Association of Remotely Piloted Vehicles (NARPV) in response to the growing use of unmanned systems during the Vietnam War. The organization later became knownastheAssociationforUnmanned Vehicle Systems (AUVS) and, in 1996, the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).
