The U.S. Navy considers UUVs an essential component to maintaining undersea dominance and is investing heavily in their development. Former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced in 2016 that the Department of Defense allocated $600 million over the next five years to develop a system of UUVs for missions including mine hunting; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; and antisubmarine warfare. In addition, the Navy is working on creating an undersea network that will enable UUVs to communicate, coordinate tasks, and resupply.
