DTCP0401, FOLLOWED BY P2463,DUETO HIGH SOOT LOADS BEFORE REGENERATION CYCLE Models: 2009 Jetta 2.0 TDI(CBEA) 2010-'14 Golf 2.0 TDI (CJAA) 2010-'14 Jetta 2.0 TDI (CJAA) 2013-'14 Beetle 2.0 TDI (CJAA) Symptoms: The car owner may complain that the MIL light is on. When the codes are scanned, code P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient and P2463 DPF Soot Accumulation will be stored in the ECM. Cause: A high soot load before regeneration can cause a restriction in the EGR filter. Correction: When diagnosing a vehicle with a P0401, perform the following steps: 1. Remove the EGR filter from the DPF and swipe the inside of the pipe at the EGR filter connection point using a clean cloth or your finger. See photos 1 and 2. 2. If your finger or the cloth comes out with black soot, replace the DPF and EGR filter together. If there is no soot on your finger or the cloth, continue with guided fault-finding diagnostics. 3. If the DPF and EGR filter is replaced, perform a regeneration cycle. If you are unable to do so, the level adaptation might need to be reset. When replacing the DPF for a P0401 DTC, it is important to replace both the DPF and EGR filter together, as soot accumulation in the EGR filter is undesirable. It is not necessary to replace the catalyst, exhaust flap or EGR cooler for a P0401 DTC.
