Shani Wallis explains how engineers are burrowing through a hill in a multi-million dollar project to protect a pretty Swiss village from traffic. The peace of the pretty village of Sissach near Basel in Switzerland is shattered each rush hour as heavy commuter traffic thunders through. A bypass tunnel through the Chienberg hill to the north of the village is designed to restore the peace. Unlike the many other tunnels being built in Switzerland, this one has shallow cover, unconsolidated material at the portals, a TBM pilot tunnel, and the potential for squeezing ground.
