Richard Milton, project manager with Transfield Tunnelling, describes how an EPBM and effective partnering proved a successful combination on the most technically challenging section of Perth's main sewer replacement project, with 1.3 km length of major works constructed with minimal disruption. Perth, capital city of Western Australia, has historically had ample space for infrastructure works because of its low population density. As a result, underground services were traditionally constructed using surface excavations that were cost effective and had minimal impact on the community. However, the city's population of 1.4 million people is expanding, putting pressure on existing services.
