Owing to cultural norms and superstitions in many parts of the world, women are rarely seen working on underground tunnelling projects.rnThis is not the case in South Africa where strong equality laws post apartheid have given women unprecedented opportunities to work in this traditionally male dominated sector. On the Gautrain project it has not been unusual to see large numbers of women labouring and operating plant below ground.
