Malta calls for EU backing of flood-protection network

Malta has called for EU support in an attempt to resurrect the National Flood Relief Project. The project, which will protect the region from frequent flooding, will start next year, said Maltese finance minister Tonio Fenech.The estimated EUR56M (USD-78.5M) endeavour calls for the construction of a series of tunnels and will require 85 per cent funding by the EU.People living in the 12 areas intended to benefit from the proposed tunnel network (Balzan, Lija, Attard, Iklin, Birkirkara, Gzira, Msida, Zebbug, Qormi, Marsa, Zabbar and Marsascala) will avoid raising their hopes too high, however as this project has been touted and subsequently shelved on several occasions since its inception 15 years ago.
