Feds greenlight Honolulu wastewater tunnel project

Honolulu received federal approval to build its 3.2-mile (5km) sewage tunnel from the Kaneohe treatment plant to the Kailua wastewater facility on May 12. The cost is estimated around USD 200M. The bored tunnel will connect the Kaneohe Pre-Treatment Facility near Bayview Golf Course and end at the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Aikahi. The diameter will be 10 to 13ft (3 to 4m), and the tunnel will be passing through Oneawa Hill. The project will replace a three-mile-long concrete main, 42in (1 m) in diameter, which must be replaced according to a 1995 legal settlement and consent decree concerning sewage spills.
