Hydraulic Fracturing uses a well bore to drill down into the shale rock formation, this can be hundreds of metres or kilometres deep. The drill then bores vertically into the shale before high pressure water and sand are pushed down into the well. This mixture then creates fissures in the rock that are around 100m to 200m long. Natural gas can then escape into the well bore and as the water is returned the gas follows and is collected at the surface.
