R0BBINS TBM BORING TURKISH HIGH-SPEED TUNNEL

TBM-maker Robbins has announced that one of its TBMs - a 13.77m-diameter Crossover XRE machine - was launched recently to bore the Esme-Salihli rail tunnel in western Turkey. The 3.05km-long tunnel will form part of Turkish State Railways' 508km-long high-speed railway line connecting Polatli in Ankara Province with the city of Izmir on the west coast. The machine has numerous upgraded features to enable it to advance through mixed conditions, expected to include sandstone, gravelstone, claystone and siltstone. Contractor Kolin Construction expects occasional groundwater and weak rock (5-9MPa / 720-1,300psi UCS), with the potential foT a gassy environment.
