Welcoming Address by Fritz Schramma, Lord Mayor of Cologne

Sehr geehrte Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, nicht ohne ein gewisses Maß an Stolz heiße ich Sie zur STUVA-Tagung 2007 in Köln herzlich willkommen, und das nicht nur, weil die STUVA in unserer Stadt beheimatet ist. Mit dem derzeit größten laufenden Projekt in Deutschland, der Nord-Süd Stadtbahn, haben wir den Fachleuten aus aller Welt ein hochinteressantes Tunnelbauprojekt vorzuweisen, über das in mehreren Vorträgen berichtet wird und dessen Baufortschritt direkt vor Ort besichtigt werden kann. Die Streckentunnel konnten erfolgreich im Sommer dieses Jahres in Schildbauweise fertig gestellt werden. Nun folgen der Bau der Stationen und der Innenausbau. Planer und Baufachleute werden nicht nur durch technische Ansprüche herausgefordert, sondern Köln-spezifisch auch durch das Bauen im historischen Boden. Die Er-kundungs- und Dokumentationsarbeiten im Zusammenhang mit dieser Baumaßnahme stellen eines der größten archäologischen Projekte in einer europäischen Metropole unserer Zeit dar.%Dear Participants, It's with a certain amount of pride that I bid you welcome to the 2007 STUVA Conference here in Cologne - and not sim-ply because the STUVA is based here in our city. With what is currently the biggest ongoing project in Germany, the North-South light urban Railway, we have a highly interesting tunneiling project to display to experts from all over the world. Various papers will deal with it and you can see for yourselves the amount of progress that has been made. In summer this year the route tun-nels were successfully conclud- ed using the shield excavation method. Now the stations and the inner linings are being con-structed. The planners and the construction specialists are not simply being faced with techni-cal requirements but with hav-ing to tunnel through Cologne's history. The investigation and documentation work in con-junction with this construction scheme represents one of the biggest archaeological projects undertaken in a European me-tropolis in our time.
