(8)Estimation of scale economies in shipping industry and its interpretations:-The case of costal shipping in Japan

The main purpose of the study is to estimate the translog cost function, and examine the economies of scale in the Japanese shipping industry. From the estimation results, we confirm the existence of economies of scale in the industry. Then, we focus on the costal shipping, and found that the grouping policies, such as promoting to establish costal shipping operating company by shipowners, have certain of effectiveness from the point of economic view..
