Landscaping products giant Marshalls -which operates the largest fleet of 44-tonne crane offload delivery vehicles in the UK- has revealed the background to its win late last year of the CILTCChartered Institute of Transport and Logistics) safety award. Regional logistics and fleet manager Guy Ripley says it was the culmination of several years of development, particularly with Hiab and SDC. "We set about designing a modern delivery fleet incorporating the best equipment available, with the requirement that safety of the operator, customers and other road users be a top priority," he says. The result: Marshalls included 360-deg ree CCTV systems that give the driver a view of the entire vehicle and load - including while in transit. It also went for cyclist proximity sensors that alert when vehicles are turning left, as well as axle weight indicators to ensure loads are evenly spread.
