Paul Neal, a driver from O'Donovan Waste Disposal, has won the driver of the year category at the Future Fleet Awards, held in London on 22 January. Neal has worked at O'Donovan Waste for 22 years; he is a full-time HGV driver, as well as logistics supervisor, and helps to train existing and new drivers. Norwegian food wholesaler ASKO is Mailing four electric trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells in a pilot venture with Scania. The 26-tonners on trial with ASKO have a 6×2*4 configuration and installed lithium-ion battery capacity of 56kWh. The electric powertrain delivers 290kW/210kW continuous output, with up to 2,200Nm of torque through a two-speed transmission. Hydrogen storage capacity is 33kg at 350bar, and the vehicles have an estimated range of between 400km and 500km. DPD has ordered 300 electric Nissan e-NV200 vans, describing it as "a landmark day" for the parcel industry's move to a sustainable future. The order is due to be completed by May. Fleet management organisation Fleet Operations is urging operators to ensure that drivers have regular eyesight tests, following the release of official figures showing nearly 20,000 drivers between 2017 and 2019 lost their licence because their eyesight did not meet the required standard. The figures were provided to insurance company Direct Line following a Freedom of Information request.
