Surprising though it seems from a UK truck operator's viewpoint, Iveco sees itself as something of a dab hand in the construction-vehicle market. In the UK last year only about 150 new EuroTrakker multi-axle rigids were registered (split roughly equally between 6x4s and 8x4s), putting Iveco at a lowly ninth place in the multi-axle-rigid sales league table. But the Europe-wide picture, as seen from Iveco's Turin head office, is very different. The Fiat group's commercial vehicles division reckons it is comfortably the third best-selling marque in the western European market for heavy off-road trucks, with a 15 per cent market share. This puts it behind Mercedes-Benz and MAN (neck-and neck at just over 22 per cent share) but well ahead of Volvo, Scania, Daf and Renault, each with a share of eight to 10 per cent. The lesson would seem to be that the rough, tough (and heavy) EuroTrakker is much more at home in the continental European construction business than it is in the UK. But the EuroTrakker model range is fast becoming history. The new Trakker has not only lost the Euro prefix but gained (at last) the Stralis cab.
