During his RAF pilot training, Wing Commander Steve Phelp's chief instructor told him that he'd "never seen flying like it." Unfortunately this was not meant as a compliment and was what convinced Steve to become an engineering officer in the RAF instead. Before his foray into flying, Steve always had a great interest in engineering, "particularly in taking things to bits and putting them together again." Whilst at school, his love of cars led to him approaching Ford for an apprenticeship. Unfortunately he wasn't accepted and had to change his plans. Instead he stayed on at school, studied for his A-levels and planned to go to university.
