The first of the longer five-section 100% low-floor Siemens Combino trams, Class D2, has entered service in Melbourne. Like the Dls before them, they were ordered by M>Tram from Siemens and have been delivered from Europe and assembled in Australia using some locally supplied components, with the fitting out being done at the Alstom Preston Service Centre. The 21 five-module D2 class trams nos.5001-5021 will join 38 three-module trams nos.3501-3538 which now are all in service with Yarra Trams. The D2s are 29.85m long and weigh 35 tonnes (unladen, approx.) compared with the Dls at 20m and 25.8 tonnes. The previous longest trams operating in Australia are the Sydney Variotram at 28.2m and the 35m Oporto Eurotram demonstrated in Melbourne last year.
