In the year 2003-04 TransAdelaide continued its strategy of business improvement, which has shown substantial gains in the last three years. TransAdelaide earned renewal of the contract for provision of passenger rail services by meeting the renewal performance benchmarks of the contract. As a result, TransAdelaide's contract was extended to April 2010. Operationally, the year saw continuing improvement with an outstanding growth in patronage of 5% on trains and 3.8% on trams, significantly exceeding the growth of the rest of the public transport system. Customer satisfaction levels remain high and a survey carried out by TransAdelaide showed continuing improvement. While fare evasion remains an issue, an increase in the number of tickets checked to 2.18m, and a 32% increase in the number of expiation notices issued, resulted from improved roving strategies including plainclothes operations.
