In 1964 the New South Wales Railways placed in service its first suburban EMU double deck trailer cars. These were not Australia's first double deck passenger cars as double deck horse cars had operated on the railways of South Australia and there have been many examples of double deck trams. Overseas there had been some double deck EMU cars of varying styles. Overcrowding of suburban trains was the reason for the NSWR developing double deck cars as cheaper than extending platforms to allow longer trains, or providing more services.
