Mac Sebree has rendered splendid service to TA at a time of an acute article shortage but is now finding it difficult to allocate time to writing these articles for us. Fortunately he has been able to finish his survey of North America before retiring from the scene and may return from time to time if an opportunity presents itself. Readers should give a very big vote of thanks to Mac. Like light rail, heavy rail (underground and surface metros) and commuter rail is a growth industry in North America. It is fueled by ready government cash. However, due to high cost, new metro systems are few and far between these days while there seems to be no end to new commuter rail schemes.These are not so expensive since they invariably utilize existing railways.
