In the early stages of the inquiry SMRT advised that it is proceeding Awith an upgrade to the system to address issues that have led to several operational problems, including major incidents in December 2011. Works commenced in July and run until 2019. The work will be co-funded by the Land Transport Authority. The upgrades include the already announced upgrades of the signalling system on the north-south and east-west lines. The program will also cover replacing all sleepers on both lines and the mounts for the third rail.
