In early May it was announced that two consortiums had been awarded three tunnelling contracts. Shimizu-Obayashi-Jaya Konstruksi and Sumitomo-Mitsui-Hutama Karya will begin work later this year. The theoretical opening date for first section is 2017. The 6 km underground section will run from the southern suburb of Lebak Bulus to the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in the centre of the city. Jakarta now has a population of 27m.
