Adelaide: New Station at Wayville The SA Government's Rationale

After research and interviews with local businesses, workers and passengers at Keswick Station, and following a background study to identify and assess options for upgrading the current facilities, the South Australian Government decided that a station in a new location next to the Adelaide Showgrounds at Wayville provided an opportunity to improve local transport. The project timing has been scheduled to align with other rail revitalisation projects such as the Goodwood Junction upgrade and electrification. The Adelaide Showgrounds generate around 1.2m visitors per year, attending a number of highly promoted and popular events including the Adelaide Show, the Big Day Out, the SA Caravan and Camping Show, and student examinations. In September each year a temporary station is constructed to service the Adelaide Show. The construction of Wayville Station will provide permanent services for all events at the showgrounds, which should boost patronage and reduce the continuing costs of temporary services.
