Cross-suburban buses in Perth's northern suburbs

City commuters and those making local school and shopping trips use public transport in Australian cities most. Medium distance cross-suburban trips are overwhelmingly made by car. Public transport for such trips can be several times slower if it is indirect, infrequent or requires a long detour via the inner city. However congestion, parking pressures and a desire for more versatile public transport has led some cities to upgrade their non-radial bus routes. Melbourne and Perth now have better circumferential services than twenty years ago. In contrast Adelaide and Brisbane have mostly retained their exclusively radial networks that reflect past travel patterns.
