New Models Redefine Low-End Sconning

Breakthroughs in document scanner design and performance seem to be a cyclical affair. In contrast to recent years, which were dominated by mid-range and high-volume scanner introductions, 2002 is shaping up as the year of new low-end models. Witness the departmental scanner segment (from 21 pages per minute to 35 ppm), in which three new models have appeared in the last quarter alone. Among the debuts, Fujitsu's ScanPartner fi-4120C and fi-4220C are sheet fed and flatbed versions off the same platform. They scan at 25 ppm (simplex) and 25 image per minute (ipm, duplex), and list prices are just $1,195 and $1,995, respectively. What's more, they operate at the same speed in both black and white (at 200 dpi) and color (at 150 dpi). Duplex support was rare in this category until recently, and color scanning typically slowed speeds by 50 percent or more.
