Technical Note: Swine Waste Characterization: A Review

A substantial number of independent studies have been conducted in the field of swine waste generation and characteristics. Suggestions that swine wastes have changed due to animal practices must be verified against the database of existing swine waste characteristics. This article is a comprehensive review of the data from the largest period of characterization studies (1965 to 1989). Forty parameters, 125 citations, and about 7,000 to 14,000 data are represented in this article. While various agencies have periodically published tables of characterization, these have lacked detailed references and data transparency to show how the standards were established. This article provides a fully transparent format that illustrates the model for future animal waste characterization standards, including detailed data, statistical estimates, and full references.
