摘要

The author would like to thank those contributors to the discussion of this paper, not just for their kind remarks but also for the very extensive set of comments they have made, which adds greatly to the value of the paper in addressing what the author believes to be an important but not widely accepted view of ESSD. The commentators have largely supported the contention behind the paper's title but have made some very useful interjections, which I will follow up as best I can bytaking each contribution in turn, though this may lead to some repetition.
