(a)"Medieval Wall Paintings in English and Welsh Churches" by Roger Rosewell, published by Boydell & Brewer, £39.95, is the most important book on an ecclesiastical subject to be reviewed in this Newsletter. Some 10% of churches in England and Wales (but practically none in Scotland) have medieval wallpaintings of varying degrees of completeness, not all of them, it has to be said, of the quality of this refined Virgin, a late 15th century mural in grisaille from Eton College Chapel. And earlier themes tended to be far less serene. Here, among Rosewell's quite outstanding photos you will find depictions of the more common subjects - the Dance of Death, the Cloth of Honour on the chancel arch and the Warning against Janglers and Idle Gossip - intended to embarrass chatterers in church.
