Experiences in Developing a Quality System for the Nuclear Analytical Methods Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (N1ST) is in the process of developing a Quality System compliant with the requirements of ISO/IEC International Standard 17025, General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibrations Laboratories (Ref 1.), and which includes relevant portions of ISO Guide 34, General Requirements for the Competence of Reference Materials Producers (Ref 2). This presentation will include a discussion of: 1. the drivers in the decision to implement this type of quality system at NIST, 2. a description of the structure of the quality system and associated documents, 3. the challenges in adapting existing policies and procedures to the meet quality system requirements under ISO/IEC International Standard 17025, 4. and the implementation plan for achieving conformity with the NIST Quality System.
