Professional Ethics and the ANS - A Summary of the Work of the ANS Special Committee on Ethics 2001-2004, invited

The ANS Special Committee on Ethics was established in 2001 by then-ANS President Gail Marcus. Since then, the two presidents that succeeded her (Harold Ray and Larry Foulke) have continued the ethics committee during their tenures. The committee is scheduled to conclude its work in June of 2004. This paper reports on tasks completed by the committee during its three years of existence: (1) to develop an up-dated code of ethics for ANS members; (2) to recommend how to enhance members' awareness of their code; (3) to develop a recommendation regarding how to strengthen members' commitment to their code of ethics; (4) to review the society's methodology for dealing with alleged violations of the code; and (5) to recommend ways to promote ongoing discussion of professional ethics topics within the ANS.
